STORYLINE:

Kenyan veteran politician Raila Odinga on Thursday officially declared his interest in the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).

Odinga, the former prime minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013, made the announcement in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, saying that he was ready to contest the AUC chairmanship position after consulting with friends across the continent.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): RAILA ODINGA, Former Kenyan Prime minister
"Should the leadership of Africa want my services, I am ready to offer myself to be of service to this continent."

Endorsing Odinga's candidature, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo said that it is the right time for a person from eastern Africa to head the AU Commission, expressing confidence in Odinga as a viable candidate.

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): OLUSEGUN OBASANJO, Former Nigerian President
"Because we believe that people who have held positions of head of governments, either at prime minister level or president level, such people will probably be the right persons armed with attributes."

Odinga, who previously served as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure, said that he had discussions with Obasanjo to mobilize leaders across the continent and beyond to support his candidature.

Odinga also expressed his determination to transform Africa and align it to become an economic superpower if he secures the chairmanship.

The current chairperson of the AU Commission, Chad's Moussa Faki Mahamat, is set to finish his two terms in 2025. The AU Commission Chairperson is elected by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government for a four-year term, renewable once.
