This is the heart-stopping moment a brave safari driver calmly stopped an elephant charging at a jeep in Sri Lanka.

The employee was taking excited visitors around the wildlife sanctuary when an agitated jumbo rushed at their vehicle in the Wasgamuwa National Park in Matale on February 14.

Footage shows the safari jeep coasting along a dirt path right behind four seemingly calm elephants before one of the giant animals suddenly turned around and barreled toward the tourists.

Upon seeing the impending attack, the ice-cool driver then climbed out of his seat, banging on the jeep's bonnet and holding up a hand to stop the charging elephant.

The jumbo appeared to understand him and eventually backed off to rejoin its companions on the muddy road.

A panicked woman could be heard saying to other tourists: 'Don't shout, don't shout.'

'It came way too close,' another shocked tourist uttered

'It was horrible,' another woman was heard adding.

As tensions subsided, the driver urged the passengers to remain calm and refrain from making any noise.

Following the close call, the relieved holidaymakers thanked the experienced guide for his quick thinking and courage in ensuring they could continue their safari tour unscathed.
