Bankrupt Birmingham City Council places derelict 2022 Commonwealth Games Athletes Village up for sale

Birmingham City Council has placed the never-finished 2022 Commonwealth Games Athletes Village up for sale as it tries to raise money whilst being hundreds of millions of pounds in debt.

The fenced-off village, which sits on the old Birmingham City University land (and retains the 'Hare of the Dog' university pub), in North Birmingham has never seen one person sleep in the flats which were supposed to be sold off to residents.

Athletes could not stay in the blocks as they were not finished on time for the 2022 games, forcing competitors to stay in university halls of residence around the Midlands.

The struggling Labour council has requested £1.25 BILLION in 'exceptional financial support' from Government.

Without it, they are unable to balance their books.
