This footage was filmed and produced 16 February 2024.

On Friday 16 February, a lone common dolphin found itself trapped in the shallows at Place, near Portscatho in Cornwall, prompting a rescue operation by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue team. Initially, several Medics were dispatched to assess the situation, but as the risk of stranding increased, a larger response team was quickly mobilized. The dolphin eventually stranded and was brought ashore for a health assessment and immediate care.

Fortunately, the dolphin was found to be in moderate condition with no visible injuries, making it suitable for a trial refloat. However, the challenging geography and tide conditions in the inlet made it unsafe to attempt a refloat there. Quick thinking from a local resident, who offered his boat tender to transport the dolphin to deeper waters, proved to be the saving grace. With Medics and a vet onboard, the dolphin was taken to the mouth of the Percuil River, close to open sea, for release.

Following the release, the dolphin was observed circling in the channel until it disappeared from sight. Ongoing monitoring of the area over the weekend will ensure swift action in case of resightings or restrandings. The BDMLR expressed gratitude to the volunteers, local residents, and the public for their collaborative efforts and support throughout the successful rescue mission. The organization remains hopeful for the dolphin's full recovery and safe return to the open sea.
