A doting Thai 'helicopter' grandmother has sat at school every day for two months to ensure her delinquent granddaughter is attending.

Kanchan Hanprakon, 65, began chaperoning teenager Manusaporn, 13, to school after learning the youngster had been cutting classes to hang out with her friends.

The elderly woman has since become a fixture in the classroom, watching over Manusaporn during lectures at the Prakhonchai Pittayakhom School in Buriram province.

Kanchan said she did not regret spending most of her time at the school instead of on her hobbies like most women her age - shopping, chatting with neighbours and growing vegetables.

She said: 'I kept monitoring my granddaughter because I didn't want her to stray down the wrong path.

'I intervened before things Manusaporn could make a habit of skipping classes. I was forced to resort to this method. She was embarrased at first but it's for her own good.

'I want her to complete higher education, but ultimately, it's up to her how much education she pursues.

'I want her to gain knowledge because knowledge can be endlessly gained and never taken away, unlike land or property, which can be sold off or lost.

'When Manusaporn grows up, I don't want her to feel obligated to take care of me.

'She should be free to start her own life. She will thank me when she's older.'

Despite being a helicopter grandma, Kanchan was welcomed by the students and teachers as she often brought snacks and it has encouraged the other pupils to be more attentive.

Manusaporn said: 'My friends all like my grandmother, so I'm happy. I know she is doing it because she loves me, so I have started to work harder. I am grateful for her caring about me.'

Manusaporn's homeroom teacher, Suwapat Phokaham, said her schoolwork has also improved.

She said: 'My students are not exactly delinquents, but they engage in mischief typical for kids at their age.

'What Kanchan is doing is admirable. She has been monitoring Manusaporn for more than two months, and her presence has also influenced the other students to be more diligent.'
