Male hippo shows off his dangerous teeth for the camera with a big yawn

It was just after sunset on a safari in the Kruger National Park. We stopped next to a large dam which had hippos and crocodiles in. Hippos are normally mostly active at night, so sunset time is when hippos are getting ready to move out the water to go and feed. I have noticed one male hippo in the distance, staring at us through the one corner of his eye the whole time. With the last light of dusk painting the water with a layer of gold, I thought it good to film the beautiful moment with its scenery and the hippo that kept staring at us. While filming the beautiful moment, the hippo suddenly lifted his head out the water and let out a loud honk for everyone to hear. It sounded intimidating. Right after the honk, the hippo turned towards us, lifted his head, and opened his mouth wide open, looking like he was having a big yawn. One thing was for sure, the hippo was not tired or just waking up. The yawn like behavior of the male hippo is a threat display, showing off his dangerous teeth and warning everyone that he is in charge and not to be messed with. Everybody was in awe with the hippo’s display and at the same time respecting his message that we should not get any closer to the water. A stunning moment at dusk in the African bush that was priceless.
