Container ship collision causes fracture of bridge, leaving 2 dead and 3 missing
Today on February 22nd around 05:30, a cargo ship struck the pier of the Lixinsha Bridge in Guangzhou, southern China, causing the bridge deck to fracture. As of 10:00 am on February 22nd, 2 people have been rescued, 2 people have died, 1 crew member sustained minor injuries, and 3 people are missing.
According to preliminary investigations, there were 4 vehicles and 1 electric motorcycle involved in the incident, with 2 vehicles falling into the water and the other 3 onto the ship. The specific cause of the accident is under investigation, and rescue efforts are underway in an orderly manner.
The Lixinsha Bridge connects to Sanmin Island, serving as the only land route to the outside world for the island. Following the accident, the island experienced a water outage. The water supply line to Sanmin Island passes through the bridge, which has been cut off after the accident, being the sole water supply channel. Currently, the company has connected water pipes from the southern side of the island's express bridge to assist villagers with temporary water supply issues.
Records indicate that the Lixinsha Bridge was completed and opened to traffic on April 29, 1994. With a length of 785.5 meters and a width of 9.8 meters, it was built at a total investment of 10.4 million yuan.
