Israel warned that it will invade the Palestinian city of Rafah for the Ramadan holiday in March if Hamas does not release the hostages in its possession first. The message was blunt, despite international pressure to shelter more than 1.4 million refugees in that city in the southern Gaza Strip.
"The world must know, and the Hamas leadership must know: if by Ramadan our hostages are not home, the fighting will continue everywhere, including the Rafah area," Israeli Minister Benny Gantz told a conference of American Jewish leaders in Jerusalem. The Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins on March 10.
"Hamas has a choice. They can surrender, release the hostages and the civilians of Gaza will be able to celebrate the Ramadan holiday," added Gantz, one of three members of the Israeli war cabinet.
It is the first time the Israeli government has set a deadline for its assault on Rafah, the city where most of the 1.7 million Palestinians displaced by the war are sheltering.
Foreign governments, fearing mass slaughter, urged Israel to avoid attacking Rafah, the last Gaza Strip city not overrun by ground troops in the four-month-old war.
Despite international pressure, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insists that the war cannot end without entering Rafah.
At the same Jerusalem conference, Netanyahu reaffirmed his pledge to "finish the job until total victory" over Hamas is achieved, with or without a hostage deal.
Gantz added that the offensive will be carried out in coordination with the U.S. and Egypt to facilitate evacuation and "minimize civilian casualties to the extent possible." However, it was not clear where the civilians would be relocated.
