Syrian state media reported that Israel bombed a residential area of Damascus this Wednesday (02/21/2024), without immediately providing further details.

"An Israeli missile attack hit the residential neighborhood of Kafr Sousa in the capital Damascus," Syrian state television said. This district also houses Army and security forces barracks.

The state agency SANA published images of the alleged consequences of the attack, in which a multi-story building is seen with a darkened facade and burst windows. In an apartment, apparently the one that was hit, a fire was still visible.

Since the outbreak of Syria's civil war in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes against its neighbor, mainly against Iranian-backed armed groups such as Hezbollah, but also against army positions.

These attacks have increased since the beginning of Israel's war against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, following the terrorist attacks by that radical Islamist organization against Israel on October 7.

On February 3, Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari said they had attacked more than 50 Hezbollah targets in Syria and 3,400 in Lebanon since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip.

Israel rarely comments on attacks in Syria but has repeatedly warned that it will not allow Iran, its regional archenemy and backer of President Bashar al-Assad's regime, to expand its presence there.
