A groundbreaking expedition led by Dr. Javier Sellanes of the Universidad Catolica del Norte has uncovered over 100 new species living on seamounts off the coast of Chile. The international team of scientists, exploring deep-sea corals, glass sponges, sea urchins, and more, made this significant discovery during a recent Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition.

The Schmidt Ocean Institute study focused on seamounts along the Nazca and Salas y Gomez Ridge, revealing distinct ecosystems on each seamount, including thriving deep-sea coral reefs and sponge gardens. These findings are now being analyzed further to confirm the identification of new species.

The research also resulted in the mapping of 52,777 square kilometers of seafloor, leading to the discovery of four seamounts within Chilean waters. Of particular note was the exploration of the tallest mountain, reaching 3,530 meters, which was named Solito by the science team.

The findings from the recent study are expected to contribute to the designation of an international high-seas marine protected area, showcasing the significance of these diverse ecosystems.
