Truck plunges off ravine killing 15 and injuring two in the Philippines
Fifteen people were killed and two more were injured when a truck plunged off a ravine in the Philippines on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mitsubishi Fuso cargo truck carrying 17 people was on its way to a market when it fell from the 50m-deep ravine in Mabinay Town, Negros Oriental province, on February 21.
Police, medics, and rescue volunteers rushed to the scene, where the overturned vehicle was lying with bodies strewn around.
Authorities said of the 17 people, only the driver Antonio Toreno, and passenger Jovanni Flores survived.
They were confined at the Mabinay Community Hospital.
Police Lieutenant Stephen Polinar, spokesman for the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office, said the passengers were all residents of La Libertad town travelling to buy livestock in Bayawan city.
He added Antonio will be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide.
Road safety is a problem in the Philippines, where poor infrastructure, lax enforcement of traffic regulations, and a high number of road users, result in frequent accidents.
