STORYLINE:
A Namibian official has said that not only Namibia but also the Global South stands to benefit from the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): SIKONGO HAIHAMBO, Executive director, Namibian Ministry of Trade and Industrialization
"There is a saying that goes, 'If you want to take people out of poverty, you have to build roads,' and the saying comes from the Chinese side. Those benefits are plenty and Namibia is still working on that in order for us to really harness the benefits that come with the Belt and Road Initiative from China. I would say that it is not only Namibia that stands to benefit but the Global South especially, but even the developed world stands to benefit through this initiative that we have embraced."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): SIKONGO HAIHAMBO, Executive director, Namibian Ministry of Trade and Industrialization
"China is one of the most important trading partners for Namibia. China's level of industrialization is very much advanced and Namibia can learn from that.
China is a country that you can rely on with respect of trade and economic development as well as consistency. So through China's initiative, we will be able to connect better, and we will be able to move goods from one country to another country."
