The confrontation between Chief Leonard Guida and Sergeant William Major on Main Street in Bradley Beach, NJ on November 9, 2023, has sparked controversy and led to Chief Guida being placed on paid administrative leave. The incident, captured on multiple body cameras, escalated from an argument over a uniform detail to a physical altercation and suspension.

Eyewitnesses, including other police officers, victims of an accident, and onlookers, witnessed the confrontation unfold during an active accident scene. Chief Guida, described as "drunk again" by Sergeant Major, approached Major about a jacket detail which quickly escalated into a heated exchange.

After a physical confrontation where Major pushed Guida onto a police cruiser, Guida eventually relieved Major of duty and suspended him, expressing affection towards him in the process. The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office has since launched an investigation into the incident.

Despite Mayor Larry Fox confirming Guida remains on paid administrative leave, Sergeant Major has returned to work full-time for the department under the command of Captain James Arnold. Chief Guida declined to comment on the situation when reached via phone.
