A 36-year-old man, identified as Gary Smith, was arrested after leading police on a high-speed chase on the M3 motorway while under the influence of alcohol. Smith was seen driving erratically through Esher in a white Seat Leon with false license plates before speeding off towards the M25.

Officers pursued Smith, who reached speeds of up to 100mph, before a police car was able to ram him to a stop at Sunbury Cross Junction. Smith was arrested for multiple offenses including dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Smith was sentenced to six months in jail, fined, and disqualified from driving for four years. The incident was part of Operation Limit, a national campaign aimed at tackling drink and drug driving, with Surrey Police making 208 arrests during the month of December.
