This is the heartwarming moment fishermen rescued and then released eight turtles that were trapped in nets in India,

Locals noticed the endangered Olive Ridley turtles washed up on the sand in the town of Dhanushkodi, Rameshwaram, in Tamil Nadu.

Without hesitation, the fishermen began cutting them free from the turtles from their nets and returning them safely to the sea.

Children who had gathered to watch the situation unfold expressed their joy by cheering and clapping as they watched the turtles walk back into the sea.

Indian Administrative Service officer Supriya Sahu said: 'Fishermen rescued and released eight Olive Ridley turtles which were accidentally caught in their fishing nets at Dhanushkodiin Rameshwaram.

"We have asked Forest officers to further strengthen the training and orientation of fisherfolk on such operations and reward them for their gesture.'

Environmentalists said that Olive Ridley turtles have been nesting along the beaches of Agonda and Galjibaga in South Goa, laying a total of 9,213 eggs.

Officials have confirmed that these turtles are known to nest at the Canacona beaches.

To ensure the safety of the nesting turtles, locals, visitors, and representatives from the Forest Department have begun monitoring the area to prevent any disturbances.

Rajesh Naik, from the Turtle Conservation Centre (TCC) in South Goa, said volunteers have been closely monitoring the nesting activities since the official start of the season on November 16.

He said: 'The efforts of the fishermen in Dhanushkodi, along with the dedication of conservationists and local communities, are crucial in protecting these endangered turtles and preserving their nesting habitats.'
