The annual Lantern Festival Market was held on Saturday in Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa, for a stunning showcase of Chinese culture to celebrate the Year of the Dragon.
The event featured various cultural activities, including Chinese culture and food booths as well as captivating performances such as Tai Chi, martial arts, live music and lion and dragon dances, which attracted over 5,000 residents and overseas Chinese.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): YASSICK, Tai Chi practitioner
"I've been practicing Tai Chi for about 20 years now. But with the Shifu (master), I've been practicing it for about three to four years. And I find it is very good for your mind, also for your body, especially when you get a bit older. We try sort of to learn more about Chinese culture. And it's celebrated as we're doing now."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): ZENOBIA, Tai Chi practitioner
"I'm very happy to be here. It's quite a lovely occasion as you can see. We really enjoy it. So thank you very much."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): PHILLIP KALUMBU, Martial arts performer
"I've been in martial arts for three years now. I appreciate Chinese culture and the martial arts culture. It has helped me very, very (much). It has played a tremendous role in my life."
SOUNDBITE 4 (English): VAGHN, Visitor
"To see something different is quite interesting. And it's a nice experience. From what I know, from what I've seen before, there is quite a big interest in martial arts as well. I know a few people, some of my friends as well, in any kind of martial arts."
SOUNDBITE 5 (English): VAGHN's PARTNER, Visitor
"And the food, the food is a big part of Cape Town. They love the Asian food, especially Chinese food. So, yeah."
SOUNDBITE 6 (English): VAGHN, Visitor
"To get Chinese takeout is also quite exciting once in a while. It's something to look forward to."
