Rare Porpoise Spotted in the Thames River Near Gravesend, UK
This footage was filmed and produced 25 February 2024.
On 25 February, the crew of Gravesend's lifeboat 'Olive Laura Deare II' had a surprising encounter with nature on the River Thames. As they were returning to the station after a job at Crossness, they spotted three porpoises swimming towards them at Northfleet.
According to RNLI crew member John Robinson, it was an incredible sight to see the dolphin-like fins of the two adults and a calf as they approached the boat. The porpoises, approximately two meters in length, even jumped out of the water, adding to the spectacle.
Gravesend RNLI Station Manager Ian Smith commented on the rarity of the sighting, noting that while seals are commonly seen in the area, porpoises and dolphins are a less common occurrence.
The wildlife in the tidal Thames is diverse, with internationally significant populations of birds, fish, and marine and terrestrial mammals. After the pod of porpoises passed by, the crew resumed their journey back to Gravesend Reach, refueled, and prepared for further service by 12:14 pm.
The unexpected encounter serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity present in the River Thames and the importance of protecting and preserving its natural habitat.
