The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won in the Senate elections held on Sunday, according to preliminary data released on Monday (26.02.2024), opening the door for the return to the political arena of former Prime Minister Hun Sen, who was replaced in August 2023 by his first-born son, Hun Manet.

According to data released by the Cambodian Election Committee, the CPP won 55 of the 58 seats up for grabs in the chamber, composed of a total of 62 senators, with the other 4 appointed directly by the king and the National Assembly.

The remaining three votes went to the opposition Khmer Will Party.
Hun Sen, 71, has already advanced his plan to lead his party's list for the Senate and be named president of the upper house when he steps down as prime minister, which he held for nearly four decades.
