Giraffe pulls comical faces whilst chewing on bone

A giraffe pulls comical faces as it chewed hard on a bone in Kruger National Park.

The filmer told Newsflare about the amusing sight: "We took some time to admire these tall creatures from a distance while feeding on their favourite trees in the area.

"While all the giraffes were feeding along, I noticed one giraffe staring at us while pulling his mouth and face in the funniest ways possible. This giraffe was not feeding on any nearby tree, and the giraffe looked like someone who was chewing on a sticky toffee.

"Then I realised what was going on and I have only ever seen this once. The giraffe had a piece of bone in his mouth which it was sucking and chewing on. This behaviour is called osteophagia, which just means feeding on bone.

"This happens when a giraffe develops a craving for certain nutrients and minerals found in bone. Giraffes do not swallow the bones, as they extract small amounts of minerals from the surface of the bone while sucking and chewing on it.

"While this is not uncommon for giraffes to do, it is rarely seen. Watching this giraffe pulling its weird and funny faces while sucking on its bone was a truly amusing and funny sight to watch."
