A well-meaning elderly man was praised for volunteering to pull a tourist's phone out of the water after he accidentally dropped it in a spring pool.

The incident unfolded at a locally very popular scenic spot in Jinan in Shandong, China, on February 16.

A tourist who was visiting the area had walked across a narrow stone pathway cutting through the large spring pool located there when he accidentally dropped their phone in the water.

Luckily for him, Zhang Jianzu, 68, who was nearby winter swimming, offered to help him retrieve it.

Gearing up with a swimming cap and blue trunks, he was filmed by bystanders as he dove into the water and searched for the lost phone.

After a while, he managed to locate the device and brought it back to its owner who received it with a thrilled expression.

Awe-struck locals could be heard exclaiming 'Wow!' at the sight of Zhang handing him his phone.

Afterward, the tourist tried to express his gratitude with CNY 100 (GBP 11), but Zhang politely declined.
