This is the dramatic moment a giant letter sign placed on the outer wall of the building of a luxury hotel caught fire in China.

Shocked witnesses recorded the sudden blaze that engulfed part of the facade of a well-known hotel located on Fucheng Road in Pudong, Shanghai, at 5:18 pm on February 22.

The hotel was reportedly the Shangri-La Hotel, part of a chain of luxury hotels and resorts found all across Pacific Asia, North America, the Middle East, and Europe.

Dramatic footage shows the Chinese character for 'la' on the hotel's facade sign quickly disappearing among flames.

As it kept burning, scorched residue fell down, subsequently igniting the characters for 'big', 'wine', and 'hotel' below.

Parts of flaming material also fell onto the lower platform, threatening to spread across the hotel.

Firefighting teams were notified and immediately dispatched to the scene.

They were able to extinguish the blaze by 5:57 pm, before it compromised the rest of the structure.

No injuries or casualties have been reported. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
