Four hero dogs given awards for helping in rescue operation at landslide site that killed 93
Four hero dogs were given awards for helping in a rescue operation at a landslide site that killed 93 in the Philippines.
The Aspin and Golden Retriever mixed-breed Appa helped locate a three-year-old girl survivor and others from the rubble during search and rescue operations at Masara on February 9.
On February 21, he received a Bronze Cross award alongside the other K-9 unit pooches named Britney, Ivy, and Tiffa for their contributions to Davao City.
Footage shows the hero dogs with their Philippine Coast Guard officer buddies, climbing the stage to receive the medals from the country's Vice President Sara Duterte.
Vice President Duterte said in a speech: ‘Appa teaches us that anyone, regardless of labels, can make a difference. His courage reminds us to cherish our animal companions more. Today, it is my honour and privilege to recognize all the deserving Coast Guard personnel, including Appa.'
A massive landslide buried homes and families underneath the debris in the village of Masara on February 6. As of February 23, authorities confirmed 93 people died while eight remained missing.
The Bronze Cross Award is an honour given in the Philippines to police, military, and civilian personnel who risk their lives to save others in natural calamities and disasters.
