The Arab League Secretariat General on Monday reiterated the importance of preservation and revitalization of Palestinian cultural heritage during its celebration of the Arab Cultural Heritage Day which falls on February 27.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): HAIFA ABU GHAZALEH, Arab League assistant secretary general
"The importance of the Palestinian heritage is that it is the identity that distinguishes the people of Palestine. It distinguishes the land as well and gives it the real value as to civilization and thought of the history of nations and their future. Stealing or falsifying the heritage is a stealing of the land. The land of Palestine has history and popular civilization."

The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States confirmed that the aim of commemorating this day, especially in this period that the State of Palestine is going through, is to sharpen and mobilize resolve, and implement the best initiatives that would help protect the heritage of Palestine within the framework of implementing the relevant Arab and international conventions relevant to the protection of cultural heritage.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): MUHANNAD AL-AKLOUK, Permanent representative of Palestine to the Arab League
"Israel that purposefully destroyed the health system in the Gaza Strip aspired as well to destroy the culture and heritage of Palestine by damaging or destroying more than 404 schools and universities, 486 mosques, 200 historical locations, 12 museums and 32 schools and cultural centers."

The Arab League affirmed its aspiration to work on documenting the heritage of Palestine for the present and future generations of the nation, and even for the entire world. It stressed that the occupation is not only oppression, extermination, and building settlements, but rather continuous attempts to turn right into wrong, falsify and steal Palestinian identity and heritage, and destroy Palestinian antiquities.
