New Fluorescent Spray Reveals Hidden Fingerprints in Seconds in Bath, UK
This footage was filmed and produced 26 February 2024.
A groundbreaking development in forensic science has emerged as scientists unveil a revolutionary water-soluble fluorescent spray designed to swiftly unveil latent fingerprints. This innovative solution, crafted by researchers from Shanghai Normal University in China and the University of Bath in the UK, promises to revolutionize forensic investigations by offering a safer, quicker, and more efficient method for fingerprint detection.
Traditional forensic techniques often rely on toxic powders or environmentally harmful solvents to uncover latent fingerprints, posing risks to both investigators and the integrity of DNA evidence. In contrast, the newly developed fluorescent dye spray exhibits low toxicity, water solubility, and rapid visualization capabilities, making it a safer and more sustainable alternative.
The fluorescent spray, available in two distinct colors—LFP-Yellow and LFP-Red—leverages the properties of a fluorescent protein sourced from jellyfish, ensuring biocompatibility and compatibility with subsequent DNA analysis. By selectively binding with the molecules present in fingerprints, the dye emits a fluorescent glow under blue light, enabling quick and accurate detection, even on challenging surfaces like brick.
Principal investigator Professor Chusen Huang from Shanghai Normal University expresses hope that this technology will enhance evidence detection at crime scenes, with plans underway to make the dyes commercially available. As collaboration with industry partners progresses, further advancements in fingerprint detection are on the horizon, promising a brighter future for forensic investigations worldwide.
