"This is a video my friend sent me while taking the Lahore Orange Line Metro. Owing to the consistent energy supply under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) energy projects, the metro line is able to run efficiently across the city of Lahore. But what many Chinese people are not aware of is that in the past Pakistan has been facing power shortages with power outages occurring every summer.

In September of 2021, Pakistan's first high-voltage direct current transmission project, the ±660kV Matiari-Lahore (high-voltage) direct (current) transmission project started operating. With the help of this project, subways and trains can now be put into operation.

Since I am studying in China, my friends and family back home are very curious about the high-voltage transmission technology that brings sufficient electricity to Pakistan. Coincidentally there is an even better high-voltage transmission energy project in Suzhou and today I am going to explore it.

Now I have arrived at Gusu converter station of the (Baihetan-Jiangsu) 800-kilovolt ultra-high-voltage (UHV) direct current power transmission project. According to the introduction from the people here, the Baihetan power transmission project is very similar to the Matiari-Lahore power transmission project, which also transports electricity to the areas with high energy demand.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): ZHU HAIFENG, Senior engineer of the State Grid Corporation of Suzhou

"Ultra-high voltage direct current is like an expressway for west-to-east power transmission (project). It excels in uninterrupted, point-to-point power delivery with high capacity, high efficiency and low loss.

Every year, 30 billion kWh of clean electricity is transmitted from Baihetan hydropower station (in SW China) to Suzhou (in E China), meeting the need of the one-fifth of the electricity demand in Suzhou. Each year, the clean energy can help save 14 million tons of coal, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 25 million tons and boost the green transformation of Suzhou's energy structure."
