This is the spectacular moment Mexico's most active volcano spewed ash and smoke, triggering flight cancellations on Tuesday.

Footage shows the Popocatepetl volcano, located in the states of Puebla, Morelos, and Mexico, belching massive plumes of smoke on February 27 morning.

Mexico's National Center for Prevention of Disasters (CENAPRED) recorded more than 77 discharges of volcanic gas, ash, and water vapour.

Twenty-two domestic and international flights out of the Benito Juárez International Airport (AICM) were cancelled for safety.

The airport said in a statement: 'After the report of suspension of some flights, due to the activity of the Popocatépetl volcano today, Tuesday, February 27, we specify the following.

'The AICM has remained open and in operation.

'Twenty-two flights of different national and international airlines have been cancelled, due to safety checks on the aircraft due to having found ashes in flight upon arrival at the AICM.

'Management personnel and specialized teams remain on alert and are evaluating the ash fall conditions. At this time, the volcanic ash cloud is heading toward the Gulf of Mexico.

'If you have a flight scheduled for this day or the following days, we recommend that you stay informed through your airline and the airport's institutional channels. Our priority is SAFETY in operations.'

A yellow volcano alert, which signifies volcanic emissions, has been issued by authorities as residents in the area were urged to be ready to evacuate.

Popocatepetl, which means 'smoking mountain' in the Aztec Nahuatl language, is the second highest peak in Mexico.

It is one of Mexico's most famous volcanoes, known for its frequent and violent eruptions.
