Five Sailors Saved from Inferno as Fishing Boat Sinks near Castellon Port, Spain

On February 27, at 14:29 hours, the five crew members of the fishing boat Nova Tia Cinta, based in Castellon, were rescued from a life raft by the Gregal Segundo boat of Consulmar, 4 miles SSE of the entrance to Castellon port. At 15:11 hours, the five survivors were disembarked at Castellon port, where an ambulance awaited them. Some required assistance due to smoke inhalation.

At 13:49 hours, the fishing boat Nova Tia Cinta reported a fire on board 4 miles SSE of the entrance to Castellon port to the Coordination Center for Maritime Rescue (CCS) of Castellon of Maritime Rescue, under the General Directorate of the Merchant Marine. Immediately, maritime controllers at the Castellon Center mobilized nearby fishing boats, the Salvamar Sabik, port tugboats, LS Cilene of the Red Cross, and a boat from the Civil Guard.

Due to the fire, the crew members abandoned the fishing boat in a life raft, and the Gregal Segundo boat of Consulmar rescued them at 14:29 hours.

At 14:35 hours, the Salvamar Sabik and the port tugboat CB Supernacho began firefighting operations.

The Salvamar Sabik reported at 14:57 hours that the port side of the fishing boat was severely damaged. Finally, the Nova Tia Cinta sank at 15:26 hours, 4 miles SSE of the entrance to Castellon port.

The Salvamar Sabik remained in the area to verify that there was no pollution, only ash and some remains of the fishing boat, which were collected by the LS Cilene of the Red Cross and the Gregal boat of Consulmar. Maritime Rescue expresses gratitude for the collaboration of all participating entities in the emergency.
