Horrified passengers bitten by bedbugs under benches at ‘worst airport in the world’
Horrified passengers were bitten by BED BUGS on benches at the 'world's worst airport'.
The travellers made the skin-crawling discovery after sitting on the metal chairs - only to leave with itchy rashes and nasty insect bites at terminals 2 and 3 of the notorious state-run Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila.
In multiple social media posts, the irate passengers showed stomach-turning photos of their bumpy reddened skin as they warned fellow fliers not to sit on the benches until the issue was resolved.
A clip that spread online also showed clusters of bedbugs crawling under the benches at the airport.
A passenger named Crissel, who arrived at NAIA on February 9, told local media: 'I felt something crawling under the seat, but I dismissed it as just a stray strand of hair or fur.
'But when we arrived in the province later that evening, I felt my skin itch. I touched it and there was a large rash. It faded the next day, but there was still a lot of irritated skin.
'I guess the cleaning they're doing now is not enough. The benches should just be removed.'
In a statement on February 28, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said they were taking action on the complaints.
The statement read: 'MIAA General Manager Eric Ines immediately ordered the terminal managers to look into the matter and provide him with a report within 24 hours stating the circumstances surrounding the incidents and their recommended corrective actions to put an end to this problem. Directive was also given for the conduct of comprehensive facility inspections and enhanced sanitation measures.
'The MIAA apologizes to the victims and assures them that a speedy resolution to this can be expected.
'Following an investigation, it was confirmed that our terminals received these complaints and that two of those who were bitten sought and were given medical assistance by our MIAA medical teams.
'The seats identified in the reports have been pulled out permanently while disinfection schedules shall continue to be undertaken.'
American luggage app Bounce listed the Ninoy Aquino International Airport as the world's worst airport for business class travellers in 2022. It ranked bottom 38th out of 38 busy airports all over the world.
This year, it was ranked '4th worst airport in Asia' for business travellers by UK website businessfinancing.co.uk, citing passenger reviews for international airports from airlinequality.com.
One frequent flier who uses the airport said: 'Tha airport is like something from the Cold War. The facilities are appalling and there are constant delays. Worryling, there is little desire to improve the important.'
Bedbugs are small, parasitic insects that feed on the blood of humans and animals while they sleep. They are known for causing itchy bites and are challenging to eliminate due to their resilience and ability to hide in various places.
