This is the disgusting moment a rat scurried over lights at an airport ranked the worst in the world.

Footage shows the rodent skittering across a ledge in full view of passengers at terminal 3 of the state-run Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila on March 1.

It crawled back and forth for three minutes, poking its nose through gaps on the fixture while looking for food before retreating into a hole in the walls.

The incident comes just days after travellers complained of a bedbug infestation on the airport's benches.

Multiple locals had aired their grievances on social media and posted stomach-turning photos showing red rashes and nasty insect bites caused by the bedbugs.

OFW Party-list Representative Marissa Magsino has slammed airport officials for the perennial problems hounding the country's busiest gateway, which saw more than 45 million passengers in 2023.

She said in a statement in Tagalog: 'I am concerned about the current situation at NAIA Terminals 2 and 3, especially on the reported incidents of bedbugs and rats that have caused worry and discomfort for the passengers.

'This adds to the ongoing problem of congestion at the airport, and the traffic jams in its vicinity. These issues are not only a hassle to our countrymen, but also ruin the nation's immage in the global community.

'Is this not a recurring problem? Why is there no long-term solution?'

In response to the complaints, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said in a February 28 statement that the benches have been removed.

MIAA said: 'The MIAA apologizes to the victims and assures them that a speedy resolution to this can be expected.

'Following an investigation, it was confirmed that our terminals received these complaints and that two of those who were bitten sought and were given medical assistance by our MIAA medical teams.'

The agency has not yet responded to the complaints of rats at the airport.

American luggage app Bounce listed the Ninoy Aquino International Airport as the world's worst airport for business class travellers in 2022. It ranked bottom 38th out of 38 busy airports all over the world.

This year, it was ranked '4th worst airport in Asia' for business travellers by UK website businessfinancing.co.uk, citing passenger reviews for international airports from airlinequality.com.
