A shocked resident watched as a dust devil tornado created a dark spinning column of dirt.

Kanokwan Yaingam captured the moment the swirling vortex tore through a field in Nong Bua Lamphu, northern Thailand, on February 29.

Footage shows the dark column or rotating air picking up loose earth and other items.

Kanokwan said: 'It was just wind, not a storm, and there was no rain after that. But it was so scary. Luckily, we weren't blown away by the wind.'

Dust devils are small whirlwinds. They form on hot, sunny days when the ground is heated, creating a temperature difference between the ground and the air above.
