Rescue Saves Three Mountain Climbers from Snowy Peril at Regajo Largo Refuge in Avila, Spain
This footage was filmed and produced 2 March 2024.
[Note: no sound]
In the early hours of this Saturday, February 2 the Guardia Civil rescued three mountain climbers at the Regajo Largo Refuge, located in the municipality of Bohoyo, in the province of Avila.
At 9:30 p.m. the Central Operational Services of the Command received a call from a mountain climber requesting help from the Guardia Civil, as he was accompanied by two other climbers at the Regajo Largo Refuge and they were unable to spend the night there. The roof of the refuge had collapsed, and the temperature was dropping, causing extreme cold.
The Central immediately activated the mountain rescue specialists from the Guardia Civil's Rescue and Mountain Group. Before starting the rescue operation, the specialists contacted the climbers by phone to assess their condition, equipment, and exact location.
The climbers reported that they were in good health but were feeling very cold, as they were not equipped to spend the night in the harsh conditions. The specialists prepared thermoses with hot drinks, warm clothing, headlamps, and crampons in case they were needed.
Equipped with the necessary gear, the Guardia Civil specialists traveled to the Collado de la Pedrera in an official vehicle and then ascended on foot in snowy and freezing conditions at a height of approximately 2,140 meters.
They reached the Regajo Largo Refuge at 12:30 a.m., provided the climbers with the necessary supplies to warm up and regain strength, and ensured a safe descent back to the Collado de la Pedrera. From there, they were transported by vehicle to Navalperal de Tormes, where the climbers' private vehicle was located. Since no medical attention was required, the rescue operation was successfully concluded at 2:10 a.m. on Saturday.
