British tourist arrested for throwing GLASS at woman's barking dog sending shards flying into her arm
A British tourist has been arrested for injuring a Thai woman in a restaurant by hurling a glass at her barking dog - causing the shards to fly into her arm.
Hot-headed holidaymaker Sam Aspen, 60, was irritated when the pet pooch began yapping as he was having a meal with his partner near Jomtien Beach in Pattaya, Thailand, on March 1.
In his anger, the Construction Site Manager from Birmingham, West Midlands, allegedly threw a glass towards Thai customer Amavalee Tongfak, 37, who was playing with the dog at the time. The glass smashed on the ground and the shards flew into the woman's arm, causing several wounds.
A bleeding Amavalee said the dog was unharmed and demanded that Aspen take her to a hospital, but he allegedly told her 'I don't care' before leaving the cafe with his friends.
Footage from the confrontation shows Sam aggressively branding Amavalee a 'f****** idiot' before tussling with a security guard trying to restrain him.
'Don't touch me... don't f****** touch me,' the Brit tells the guard.
Police launched an investigation and identified Sam as the rampaging patron. He was summoned to the Na Jomtien Police Station for questioning on March 3 .
Sam reportedly admitted to injuring Amavalee and claimed he was 'absent-minded' on the day of the incident after taking antibiotics for his tooth pain.
He also apologised to the Thai woman and handed her 18,000 baht (around 400 GBP) of financial compensation in front of the local press, saying he loved Thailand and that 'it would never happen again'.
Speaking to local reporters, Amavalee said: 'We have talked things out and he admitted his wrongdoing. He said he wanted to continue staying in Thailand and that he did not intend to hurt me.
'He apologised in front of the media earnestly, so I am satisfied.'
Police Colonel Wattanachai Saengrit, superintendent of the Na Jomtien Police Station, said the Brit had admitted the attack before being fined and released.
The police report into the case states that the Brit threw the glass at the dog but the glass shards injured the alleged victim.
The officer said: 'The British man was charged with violating Section 390 of the Thai Criminal Code, which states that anyone carelessly causing mental or bodily harm can be imprisoned for up to one month, fined up to 10,000 baht, or both.
'However, since he managed to negotiate with the victim, his penalty was reduced to only a fine.'
Former fishing village Pattaya became popular with American troops on 'rest and relaxation' breaks in the 1960s when the U.S. military had bases in Thailand. In the ensuing years, the coastal resort spawned into a chaotic sex tourism destination.
Embarrassed officials have made progress in gentrifying the region with family tourism projects but a ravenous nightlife industry and corrupt police have hampered their efforts, with undesirables from all nations still attracted to the seedy city.
