On Sunday, March 3, 2024, thousands of Russians flocked to Moscow's Borisov cemetery to pay their respects to Alexei Navalny, the prominent opposition figure who passed away on February 16, 2024, under contentious circumstances. The burial site was adorned with a towering mountain of flowers, reaching the height of a person, as mourners patiently waited in queues for up to an hour and a half to lay their floral tributes. Despite cemetery security preventing extended stays at the grave, the atmosphere remained solemn. Navalny's death, officially attributed to natural causes, had sparked controversy as authorities denied independent pathological examinations, leading to a delayed release of his body. The public ceremony on March 1, 2022 finally allowed Navalny's family to lay him to rest in his native Moscow at the Borisov cemetery.
