This is the dramatic moment a truck suddenly braked causing a five-car pile-up at a police checkpoint in Thailand.

The lorry reportedly halted without warning while approaching the checkpoint along Mittraphap Road in Nakhon Ratchasima province on March 1.

Police and medics received a report at 1:30 am, and went to the scene where they found the trailer truck, a bus, two vans, and a 10-wheeler caught in the collision.

Two passengers with leg injuries were extracted and taken to the nearby Debaratana Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital.

A bus passenger told officers that the trailer truck's abrupt halt caused a 'chain reaction' as the cars behind it crashed into each other. However, police told the drivers they were at fault for not keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
