Lorry barrels through intersection and drags car across highway
This is the shocking moment a lorry barreled through a junction and dragged a car across a highway in Thailand.
CCTV footage shows a Hino six-wheeler crashing into a Toyota vehicle at an intersection near the Mae Sot Airport in Tak province on March 2 afternoon.
Police Colonel Pittayakon Petcharat, superintendent of Mae Sot Police Station, said police received a report at 2 pm.
Thai lorry driver Settha Tharinsu, 33, was found by officers 'in a disoriented condition' at the scene.
While inside the Toyota van were four injured schoolchildren and the Burmese driver Phyu Phyu Thein, 40.
Medics rushed the family to the Mae Sot Hospital, with two of the youngsters seriously injured.
Phyu Phyu Thein he had picked up his two sons and two nieces at school when the speeding truck ploughed into their van and pushed them some 50 metres across the road.
Meanwhile, lorry driver Settha claimed he had dozed off at the wheel after eating lunch and was only jolted awake by the crash.
Police have detained him for further legal action.
Local media reported that one schoolgirl was still in critical condition.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
