Two Filipino transgender sex workers were taken to court today accused of an attack on Thai ladyboy rivals that sparked a mass brawl in Bangkok.

The pair had allegedly been arguing with the rival prostitutes before they came to blows along the Sukhumvit Road red light district at the weekend.

Locals vowed revenge and more than 100 local call girls were mobilised through chat groups and gathered at the Citin Sukhumvit 11 hotel on Monday night. Police were called and when the suspects were hauled out, a mass punch-up ensued with stilettos flying through the air and some trans girls having their clothes torn off.

Police Colonel Yingyot Lhekkla, deputy commander of Metropolitan Police Bureau Division 5, today escorted the two Filipino transgender suspects, named only as Miranda and Castro, to Bangkok South Kwaeng Court to begin proceedings against them for allegedly assaulting Thai transgender women.

When escorted from Lumpini Police Station, Miranda and Castro covered their faces with sunglasses and made apologetic gestures to reporters, before entering a van.

Afterward, they were handed over to the Immigration Bureau for detention for government to consider whether they should be deported or blacklisted for working illegally as escorts and not having the necessary work permits and visas.

Police said that other suspects who fled the scene are currently being tracked down to face charges.

Colonel Yingyot Lhekkla said: 'The suspects will be handled according to the law. The Philippines Embassy is also assisting with the case. There is not a big problem with foreign sex workers in the area.'

Alleged Thai victim Woonsen, also arrived at Lumpini Police Station to request an update from the police and call for compensation from the Filipino girls.

She said: 'I'm unhappy that the police currently plan to charge only three suspects, despite more than 10 people being involved in the assault.

'I remember the faces of everyone involved but I don't know their whereabouts, as they have all disappeared.'

Woonsen said that she did not hold any grudges against the Filipino trans girls and viewed the incident as an individual matter that could be discussed if they apologised'.

The vibrant Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok has become one world's cheapest and most colourful red light areas - attracting sex workers and lascivious tourists from around the world.

Historians claim the nightlife industry dates back to the 1960s when American troops had military bases in Thailand. Many GIs opened bars in the notorious Patpong district and the city now has tens of thousands of strip clubs, gogo bars, massage shops, and street prostitutes available round-the-clock.

Despite claiming that prostitution is 'illegal', those inside the industry - including many British ex-pats who run bars - operate with impunity due to regular payments to police.

Thailand was ranked 108 out of 180 countries in Transparency International's latest index. They found that a quarter of state workers had received a bribe in the previous 12 months and 88 per cent of residents perceived 'government corruption as a big problem'.
