Farmers' crops fail as villages are covered in volcanic ash from volcanic eruptions in Indonesia
Volcanic eruption of Mount Marapi in Agam District, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia is on the rise. On Wednesday, March 6, 2024, there were repeated eruptions and continuous volcanic ash columns.
Time-lapse footage filmed at Camat Canduang's office, seeing the volcanic material of the mountain eruption passing through the sky above the office, and then the volcanic ash fell into the camera lens.
The mountain eruption, accompanied by the sound of the thunder and the shaking, led the officer to come out, looking toward the summit of the Marapi mountain, the source of the blast covered with fog.
Volcanic ash rains of moderate to mild intensity encircled the village, fine-sanded ashes sticking to roofs, cars, and farms.
Sub-District Head Canduang official, Camat Noviardi, said that since the massive eruption on December 3, 2023, the area north of the Marapi mountain within a radius of 7 kilometers has been frequently hit by ash. "This ash rain interferes with our activities. Also, citizens, especially farmers, are affected as the farmland is covered with volcanic ash so many fail to harvest," Noviardi added.
Marapi Fire Mountain Observatory, Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) in Bukittinggi, the Mount Marapi at an altitude of 2,981 meters above sea level, during Wednesday 6 March 2024 there were six eruptions and 240 gusts. The most gusts in one day in the last three months.
