Man caught trying to smuggle gold jewelry and iPhones hidden in clothes and butter packets
Customs officials in Mumbai, India, have seized more than 6 pounds of gold and iPhones that passengers attempted to smuggle in their clothing and butter packets.
The alleged smuggling attempts occurred over a four-day period from March 1 to March 4 at the city's international airport.
In total, officials said they thwarted 10 separate smuggling attempts, with some of the items discovered concealed in passengers' private parts.
One unnamed man was allegedly caught attempting to carry 390 grams of gold dust encased in wax in his private parts while traveling from Dubai to India.
In another case, officials discovered an unclaimed gold bar weighing 700 grams underneath a plane seat on am Indigo flight from Phuket, Thailand, to Mumbai . During a failed smuggling attempt, airport cleaning staff later found more gold in a washroom.
Remarkable footage shows officials uncovering even more gold from a passenger who had ingeniously attempted to conceal the precious metal in their body and clothing.
Tiny gold pieces were sewn into the seams of a handkerchief and male shorts carried by the traveler. Incredibly, some of the gold had even been stuffed in individually wrapped butter.
Following the discovery, Mumbai Customs said: 'A person traveling from Dubai to Mumbai via Air India Flight AI 984 was found to carry 24 KT Gold jewelry, cut pieces of wire collectively weighing 215 grams. Two iPhones were also recovered.'
