The wildfires in the Texas Panhandle continue to pose a threat to residents and firefighters alike, as activity has increased with high temperatures and winds on March 2, 2024. The Smokehouse Creek, Windy Deuce, and Grape Vine Creek Fires are still raging, with the current containment levels remaining stagnant.

Firefighters are hard at work monitoring and responding to flare-ups within the fire perimeters, while also conducting mop-up operations. The use of dozers is crucial in constructing fire lines to contain the spread of the fires. However, the unauthorized use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, poses a dangerous threat to firefighter safety and the overall efforts to suppress the wildfires.

The approaching cold front is expected to bring changes in weather conditions, with temperatures reaching into the mid-70s, north winds up to 15 mph, and relative humidity ranging from 16-20 percent. The moisture levels of grass fuels have increased, providing improved conditions for ground firefighting operations. Despite this, the potential for rapid fire spread remains high, with flames reaching up to 5 to 20 feet in tall thick grass.

Major closures in the affected areas include Sanford Yake on the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument, and several other areas. Burn bans are in effect for Hemphill, Roberts, Potter, Moore, and Gray Counties. Residents are urged to stay informed and follow local sheriff websites for updates on road closures.

The Southern Area Blue Team, working in cooperation with various agencies, has taken on the task of managing the wildfires in the Texas Panhandle. The safety of firefighters, responders, and the public remains a top priority, as efforts continue to minimize property losses and protect lives.
