In the early hours of Saturday, Aug. 19, two Florida sheriff’s deputies are being hailed as heroes after a daring rescue in Orlando. Deputies Yortsan Gandia Ares and Tyler Casto of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office sprang into action after a Nissan Altima crashed into a retention pond, leaving a man struggling to stay afloat and a woman unconscious underwater.

Responding to the scene at 2:30 a.m., the two deputies entered the pitch-black, debris-filled pond and managed to pull both individuals to shore. They quickly administered CPR to the woman, ultimately reviving her before paramedics arrived.

Body camera footage of the rescue has since been shared on Facebook, showcasing the deputies’ swift actions and life-saving efforts. The driver, a 42-year-old man, and the 33-year-old woman were hospitalized with serious injuries following the crash, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The driver reportedly told investigators that he had failed to realize the road ended at the retention pond, resulting in the crash. Despite the dangerous conditions and uncertain circumstances, Deputies Ares and Casto did not hesitate to dive into the murky waters and carry out the rescue.
