The conflict between army chief Abdel Fatah al Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has left tens of thousands dead, infrastructure destroyed and an economy in tatters.

It has also displaced more than eight million people, in addition to two million who had fled their homes before the conflict, making it the world's largest displacement crisis.

"Millions of lives and the peace and stability of an entire region are at stake," warned WFP Executive Director Cindy McCain.

"Twenty years ago, Darfur was the world's biggest hunger crisis and the world rushed to respond," she said, referring to the vast region of western Sudan.
