German logistics giant DHL was one of the first international logistics companies to establish a presence in China. The country now plays a crucial role in the company's global strategy.

DHL estimates its global market share at around 43 percent according to a 2021 survey.
It has seen market share expansion thanks largely to its booming e-commerce business in China.

"Some of those big Chinese e-commerce players which are largely with us, would have driven that 43% to 47%. So we know that we continue on the big trajectory."
Last year, the company invested over 300 million yuan (41.7 million USD) in China to expand and upgrade its facilities in China.
Pearson said technological advancements in China avail DHL of technologies that drive customer satisfaction, employee engagement, or operational efficiency.

"There's unlimited technological developments in China that they can select from. So it might be things that improve customer satisfaction. It might be scanners on the finger for our couriers, that aid operation efficiency. It might be ergonomics and technology in the hubs that stop injuries and so on and so forth. There are absolutely a leader in that."
At a time when headwinds persist, Pearson sees new growth opportunities for DHL as China opens its door wider to the outside world.
