STORYLINE:

Amidst gold tiles and red walls of picturesque gardens, Chinese youths adorned in traditional attire, known as Hanfu, gracefully posed for photographs, evoking a nostalgic journey to ancient times.

The growing popularity of this fashion trend has ushered in new business opportunities for many across China, including services such as traditional Chinese makeup, photo shoots, and costume rentals.

Mamianqun, a traditional long pleated skirt, is one of the most sought-after products.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): BAI JING, Consumer
"In the past, the design of Mamianqun was traditional, and people wore it less, only during festivals or performances. I feel that the design and tailoring of Hanfu have evolved to suit everyday wear, making it appropriate for daily occasions."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): SHI YUE, Consumer
"I feel that wearing Hanfu is to embrace a facet of Chinese traditional culture. I feel the Hanfu culture has been very well promoted, evident from its frequent showcase on short video platforms by influencers who wear Hanfu while traveling around the country. I love the feeling Hanfu conveys, and it inspires me to wear Hanfu as I travel across the country."

Caoxian County is currently home to nearly 12,800 online Hanfu stores and over 2,000 companies related to the business, while close to 100,000 people are involved in the Hanfu industry.

Luoruyan Hanfu, a local brand in the county owned by Yao Chixing, was founded in 2021.

Her company launched dozens of Mamianqun designs during the Chinese New Year, selling more than 30,000 sets within two months.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): YAO CHIXING, General manager of Luoruyan Hanfu, Caoxian County
"This collection is our special New Year attire, boasting over a thousand designs. This year is the Year of the Dragon. We've incorporated dragon and phoenix motifs into our garments. These two particular designs have been a hit, with sales reaching about 500 sets daily."

SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): YAO CHIXING, General manager of Luoruyan Hanfu, Caoxian County
"The demand for Mamianqun has surged dramatically, prompting us to halt our daily live online sales when orders reach a certain level, and our workshops have to keep producing at full capacity."

In January, the company received the first batch of more than 100 overseas orders from the UK.

SOUNDBITE 5 (Chinese): YUAN YANYU, General manager of Luoruyan Hanfu, Caoxian County
"We've got more and more foreign clients this year. There are diversified foreign consumer groups with unique preferences, so our design team is dedicated to crafting products tailored to meet their specific needs."
