Asif Ali Zardari, the ruling party-backed candidate, wins Pakistan's presidency for the second time after sweeping the polls. The president of the election, Justice Amir Farooq, made the announcement on television.

Zardari won 411 votes, defeating the 181 cast by nationalist leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai, the candidate backed by members of jailed Imran Khan's party, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said in a statement.

Achakzai, his opponent, was backed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and its ally, Bilawal Zarzadi Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party (PPP), both second and third in the 8 February general election.

After the results were announced, Sharif congratulated the new head of state in a written statement, saying that the election symbolises: "The continuity of democratic values".
