Severn bore causes freak flooding on main road in Gloucestershire

Minsterworth, Gloucestershire, UK. 12th March 2024. A main road next to the River Severn is overcome by flooding caused by the only five star bore of the year. The A48 near Minsterworth was temporarily closed as water swept across the road causing traffic to stop in both directions. The Severn Bore is generated by the Atlantic Ocean tide entering the Bristol Channel and forcing its way into the Severn Estuary, filtering into a narrow channel and causing the water to rise by anything up to 15 metres. The water reaches speeds of up to 20kmph as it nears Minsterworth and, as the width of the River Severn narrows, becomes held up causing the natural bore phenomenon.
