Whale calf protects mother from approaching surfer in intense encounter captured by drone

A southern right whale calf who was gently swimming with its mother lashed out at a surfer who got too close to the marine mammals.

Drone footage filmed by Brett captured the intense moment off the coast of Bremer Bay back in 2021.

He told Newsflare: "The female adult whale has bought her new calf, most likely a male, into a sheltered bay in winter deep southwestern Australia. The whales come to the area to give birth every year after starting the migration from the Antarctic.

"The surfer, who was about 65, was in the bay and went to get a closer look at the whale and her calf. The mother was very tolerant but if you get between the calf and the mum then all hell can break loose. In this case, the calf did not like the surfer and let him know.

"I was filming whales in the bay at the time and saw the surfer paddle out to the whale. I was going to give him a copy of the video for keepsake but it turned out to be more than just a swim past."
