Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as runny nose, is a common condition affecting about 20% of the population.
It is defined as inflammation of the nasal mucosa, and is characterized by sneezing, nasal congestion and itching, and rhinorrhea.
The nose is invariably affected in allergic rhinitis.
In addition, middle ear and the eustachian tube, pharynx, nasal and paranasal sinuses, and eyes can also be affected.
The disease can be triggered by tree or grass pollen, outdoor molds, house dust mites, animal dander, very cold weather, and industrial pollutants.
Inhalation of these elements leads to inflammation of the nasal mucosa, mainly driven through an IGE mediated antibody response.
