Testosterone is the primary sex hormone in males, and it is responsible for many important functions, including sperm production, maintenance of sex drive, also called libido, and maintenance of muscle and bone mass.
Testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone, or DHT by the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase.
DHT is the active form of testosterone, and it is associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenic hair loss in men.
5-alpha reductase enzyme exists in several forms.
Finasteride inhibits both type 2 and type 3 5-alpha reductase, resulting in reduced conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone, reducing the size of the prostate and hair loss, as well as hirsutism in women.
Common adverse effects of finasteride include the following.
Reduced sex drive, or low libido.
Erectile dysfunction.
Decreased ejaculatory volume.
Gynecomastia, or abnormal breast development in men.
Orthostatic hypotension.
Dizziness.
Dyspnea.
Weakness.
Runny nose.
And skin rash.
Finasteride is contraindicated in any person who has a hypersensitivity to it.
In addition, pregnancy and breastfeeding are another two contraindications.
