A fire broke out on a Thai warship that was struck by an artillery shell injuring 13 people.

The HTMS Khirirat was hit by the naval artillery shot discharged from the HTMS Chonburi while both vessels were anchored at the Laem Thian Pier in Chonburi province on March 14.

The shell hit the rear section of the vessel and exploded, sparking a blaze that wounded at least 13.

They were taken to the transported to Somdech Phra Nangchao Sirikit Hospital for treatment. Ten of them were in 'serious condition', the Royal Thai Navy said.

Navy firefighters dispatched four firetrucks and brought the flames under control in 30 minutes.

The HTMS Chonburi had reportedly docked from a military drill on Wednesday, when an unexploded round was lodged in one of its front artilleries.
