STORYLINE:
Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit met Thursday with visiting Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation Jose Manuel Albares in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, discussing the situation in the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian issue.
During the meeting, Albares reiterated his country's solidarity with the Palestinian people, voicing his country's readiness to recognize the Palestinian state as soon as possible, according to an AL statement.
The Spanish foreign minister underscored "the priority of reaching an immediate and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza, maintaining the unity and geographic link between Gaza and the West Bank under the leadership of the Palestinian Authority, and working on establishing an independent Palestinian state soon," it added.
For his part, the AL chief called on Spain's top diplomat to push forward more recognition of Palestine in the European Union (EU), while expressing appreciation for Spain's consistent support for Palestinians since the start of the Gaza conflict last October.
He also stressed the importance of Arab-European joint action to hold an international peace conference in Spain as soon as possible, according to the statement, referring to a proposal initiated by Spain and approved by the Council of the EU last October.
The Spanish foreign minister embarked on a tour of the Middle East on Tuesday, with his first stop in Jordan, seeking to "promote a solution to the serious crisis stemming from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," according to a statement by his ministry.
